Apple has disappointed a lot of its enterprise users when it decided to terminate its Xserve line of hardware.
This can be seen as a paradox since Apple is making huge inroads in entreprise environments thanks to Iphone and Macbooks and it has made clear that it is still serious about server software.
The paradadox is however only apparent. Server hardware has become a commodity where Apple has had hard times to compete.
A few months ago, Apple has announced a partnership with Unisys, a specialists of large entreprise systems and data centers implementations.
This gives us some hints about Apple’s future strategy in the servers business:
1°Apple will partner with Hardware servers makers to let OSX server run on top of their machines thanks to a virtualization environment. This is a solution that Apple already authorizes on its own machines. Knowing that Steve Jobs has alway had a very good relationship with Oracle and Sun, it is likely that the first implementation of this offering will be based on Oracle servers.
2°Apple will offer “virtual” servers in its north Carolina DataCenter. This will allow small companies to run their server applications (wiki, mail, podcasts) withouts making hardware investements. A form of Mobile Me for entreprises.
3° Apple wil maintain a range of small servers for SOHO uses (like the mac mini and the mac pro servers).
